Photographing a Catskills Lakefront Airbnb Designed for Gathering and Getaways

Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful lakefront Airbnb in Loch Sheldrake, New York—a spacious five-bedroom retreat in the Catskills designed for families and group getaways. Listed on Airbnb, the property combines rustic-modern style with direct lake access, mountain scenery, and the kind of atmosphere guests are looking for when they want to unplug and reconnect.

What immediately stood out about this property was that it wasn’t just selling a place to sleep—it was selling an experience.

My job as the photographer was to help potential guests feel that experience before they ever arrived.

Capturing the Feeling, Not Just the Rooms

One of the biggest differences between photographing an Airbnb and photographing a traditional real estate listing is the mindset behind the images.

With real estate photography, the goal is often to document the layout clearly for potential buyers. With short-term rental photography, the goal shifts toward storytelling and emotion.

For this shoot, we focused heavily on:

  • The warmth of the natural light coming into the living spaces

  • Wide shots that showed the flow of the home for larger groups

  • Detail images that helped the property feel welcoming and lived-in

Why Airbnb Photography Requires a Different Approach

Guests browsing Airbnb listings make decisions quickly. In many cases, they are comparing dozens of properties in just a few minutes.

Strong photography helps answer important emotional questions immediately:

  • Can I picture myself here?

  • Does this feel relaxing?

  • Would my family or friends enjoy this space?

  • Does this property feel worth the price?

For larger group properties like this one, it’s also important to visually communicate:

  • Space

  • Comfort

  • Flow

  • Shared gathering areas

That’s where professional composition, lighting, and perspective make a huge difference.

A Marketing-Driven Perspective

My background in photojournalism, marketing, and visual storytelling shapes how I approach Airbnb photography. I’m not simply documenting rooms—I’m thinking about how the listing will perform online and how the images influence guest perception.

In a crowded short-term rental market, strong visuals can help a listing:

  • Stand out in search results

  • Generate more clicks

  • Create stronger first impressions

  • Increase perceived value

And for destination properties like this Catskills retreat, photography becomes an important part of selling the experience itself.
