How Often Should You Update Your Professional Headshot?

Your headshot is often the first impression people have of you. Before someone meets you in person, they may see your photo on LinkedIn, your company website, a speaker bio, or even a media article.

Because of that, your headshot isn’t just a photo — it’s part of your professional presence.

But one question comes up all the time:

How often should you update your professional headshot?

There isn’t a single rule that fits everyone, but there are some clear guidelines that can help you decide when it’s time for a refresh.

A Good Rule of Thumb: Every 2–3 Years

For most professionals, updating your headshot every two to three years is a smart cadence.

Over time, subtle changes happen — hairstyles evolve, glasses change, fashion shifts, and most importantly, your career progresses. A headshot that once represented you well may no longer reflect where you are professionally today.

Keeping your photo relatively current helps ensure that when someone meets you in person, you actually look like your headshot.

When Your Appearance Has Changed

Sometimes the answer is simple: you no longer look like the photo.

If you’ve had noticeable changes such as:

  • A new hairstyle or facial hair

  • Wearing glasses now (or no longer wearing them)

  • Significant weight change

  • A different overall style

…it may be time for an update.

Your headshot should represent the person someone will meet today, not the person you were five or ten years ago.

When Your Career Has Advanced

Career milestones are also a great time to refresh your photo.

You may want a new headshot if you’ve recently:

  • Been promoted

  • Started a new job

  • Launched a business

  • Moved into leadership

  • Begun speaking publicly or appearing in media

Your headshot should visually support the professional level you’re operating at now.

When Your Current Photo Was Never Meant to Be a Headshot

A lot of people are using photos that were never really intended to be professional headshots in the first place.

Some common examples include:

  • Cropped group photos

  • Vacation photos

  • Wedding photos

  • Selfies or phone snapshots

  • Photos taken in poor lighting

These images may be convenient, but they don’t present the same level of professionalism as a well-lit, intentionally crafted headshot.

When Your Photo Doesn’t Match Your Brand

As careers evolve, the image you want to present may evolve too.

A lawyer, consultant, entrepreneur, or creative professional may all want to convey something slightly different through their headshot — confidence, approachability, authority, creativity, or warmth.

A professional headshot session allows you to intentionally shape that first impression.

A Quick Test: Would Someone Recognize You?

Here’s a simple way to decide.

If someone who has never met you saw your headshot online and then met you in person today, would they recognize you immediately?

If the answer is no — or even maybe — it’s probably time for an update.

Why It Matters

Your headshot appears in places that matter:

  • LinkedIn profiles

  • Company websites

  • Speaking engagements

  • Press features and media appearances

  • Email signatures

  • Professional bios

In many cases, it’s the first visual introduction someone has to you.

A current, professional headshot communicates that you take your work seriously and that you’re present and engaged in your career.
